Expedition: The survival of tigers, an endangered apex predator, is crucial to our global environmental health. Having coexisted with humans for over two millennia in the Sundarbans, this iconic species has thrived in this mangrove forest which harbors one of the largest connected tiger populations in the world. However, they are now threatened by conflict with people, poaching, and climate change. Hasan’s project will study tiger distribution and behavior by supplementing the use of reliable camera traps with the first-time use of passive acoustic monitoring devices. By understanding how human pressure and climate change are shaping heterogeneous tiger distribution in the Sundarbans, as well as engaging in community outreach programs, this project will create the path that leads to continued coexistence of tigers and humans for millennia to come.
